Puglia

Puglia, is located in the south-eastern peninsula, with its coastline boarding both the Ionic and Adriatic seas; it is a flat and fertile Eubea landscape, which forms the famous Italian ‘heel’. The region is home to Lecce, 'The Florence of the South', and traditional Trulli houses which are scattered in-land and along the beautiful coastlines, of which there are miles of unspoilt beaches, stunning cliff-faces and rocky coves.

Puglia is the principal source of cereals and oil and, along with Sicily and Veneto, produces more wine than any other Italian region. However, the wine industry in this region is still dominated by large cooperatives which have shipped to the North of Italy high-alcohol blending wine or concentrate grape must for years. Something has recently changed in this region where the cooperatives have scaled back production towards branded and bottled wine and quality focused small wine makers have made an entry. Puglia has an enormous potential to become one of the most important Italian wine region not only for quantity but also for quality. A Mediterranean climate along with an unusual type of soil for a flat region - a mixture of ferrous red clay and sand combined with limestone - is a perfect combination for high quality wine production. The minerals in the soil give the wine power, while the limestone underneath allows for good drainage to maintain acidity.

The wine industry in Puglia is dominated by red grapes with Primitivo (also known in California as Zifandel) and Negroamaro on top followed by Uva di Troia and Malvasia Nera. The majority of white wines come from Trebbiano, Verdeca and Bombino Bianco.
