Piemonte

PiemontePiemonte, which in Italian, means “at the foot of the mountain”, with its fifty-two Denomination of Protected Origin (DOC and DOCG) is the region that produces the largest number of best known and world-appreciated wines; such as the rich and smoky Barolo or the elegant Barbaresco among the reds and the bubbly Asti among the whites.

Piedmont, with borders on Switzerland and France, is hemmed in by the Alps and the Apennines. With the exception of the white-wine zone of Gavi, which receives a kind of Bordeaux-like maritime influence from Mediterranean breezes, Piedmont’s viticulture is more comparable in terms of climate to the French Burgundy. It would seem given Piedmont’s position in the shadow of the Alps, and its relatively cool, often damp climate, that it might be better suited to white wine production. Nevertheless, between 60 and 70 percent of all Piedmontese wine is red.

The majority of Piedmont's wines derive from native vines such as the Nebbiolo (source of the Barolo and the Barbaresco wines), Barbera and Dolcetto. Piedmont is also the region where international grape varieties give good wines. Wine makers have, in fact, experienced with success the use of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay which in Piedmont often takes on a crisp, mineral character reminiscent of the Chardonnay of Burgundy.
