Situated in the north-east of the country Veneto is among the foremost wine-producing regions in Italy, both for quality and quantity. The variety of wine types produced in Veneto reflects the terroirs of the Eubea different grape growing areas.

The western province of Verona, in the hills between Lake Garda and the town of Soave, which benefits from the influence of the lake, is well-known for its usually dry and still white, Soave, from the grape variety Garganega. Among the reds, the hearty and relatively young Valpolicella, made mainly from Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, is one of the most produced red wines in the whole country. The same grape variety as Valpolicella, if partly dried, can give the Amarone, Italy’s most authoritative red wines, and the sweet Recioto della Valpolicella. Another red, Bardolino, from the same basic grapes as Valpolicella, is enviably easy to drink also in the dark pink Chiaretto version.

In the second big area of wine production, the Veneto’s central hills in the provinces of Vicenza and Padova (Colli Euganei) give reds made from Cabernet and Merlot, and whites made from the Pinots and Chardonnay. The hills north of Venice (Conegliano and Valdobbiadene) are the house of the popular dry and bubbly white Prosecco.

Moving east toward the Friuli Venezia Giulia, in the third area of wine production, Merlot and Cabernet among the reds dominate the plains of the Piave and Tagliamento northeast of Venice giving wines known as the Italy’s Bordeaux-type blends. Among white varieties, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon and Chardonnay continue to gain ground, often in youthfully fruity versions but also as oak-aged wines.
