Campania

Campania iEubea s derived from the Latin Campania Felix, which translates as 'Fertile Countryside' and it is an historic region, previously colonised by the Greeks and after dominated by the Romans. Walking on the narrow streets of Naples, the capital of Campania, local people and visitors can still feel the French Bourbons' legacy who occupied the region during the 17th and 18th century.

Campania is considered an extremely fertile land; famed for the beautiful Cilento National Park, the Island of Capri, the Sorrento Peninsular and the Amalfi Coast. However, it is most renowned for Mount Vesuvius and the eruption which covered Pompeii in 79 A.D.

Wine production in this region dates back to the 13th century B.C. however, the past decades have seen an increase in the production of DPO quality wines. Indigenous grape varieties such as the red Aglianico and the white Falanghina, Greco and Fiano are largely cultivated in Campania on rich, volcanic soils; from the coast where the vineyards benefit of the Mediterranean sea breeze and give light-medium body and delicate wines, to the the hills and mountains of Avellino and Benevento provinces where the cooler, Burgundy style climate contributes to the production of full-body, complex reds and whites.
