Abruzzo

AbruzzoAbruzzo, with its one DOCG and three DOC wines, has been considered for many years a region of bulk and cheap wine production. However this is changing and Abruzzo, as of much of southern Italy, is undergoing a gradual transition from bulk-wine production to bottled, boutique wines.

Abruzzo has all of the requisite elements for making great wine: a desiderable mix of mountain and maritime air and a relatively dry climate. Most of the Abruzzo’s vineyards are situated along a series of river valleys that run from the Apennines mountain to the Adriatic sea.

The most important white grape in Abruzzo is Trebbiano, which is also the most planted variety in Italy. It gives a light and crisp wine, with hints of apple and wildflower in the aroma and a pronounced acidity on the palate. On the other hand, from the red grape variety Montepulciano, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is the most exported DOC Italian wine. It is deeply coloured, fruity wine with naturally sweet tannins and low acidity – a perfect wine to be drunk when young, however, of a great depth and durability when aged.
